As an educational facility established to achieve the educational goals prescribed by Ajou University Regulations, The Central Library opened on March 15, 1973 along with the opening of Ajou Junior Technical College, the predecessor of Ajou University, with the purpose to contribute to the learning, cultural knowledge and study of the students and faculties by collecting, accumulating and distributing information.
At that time, the library had 120 seats on a 265-pyeong area of the first floor of Wonchun Hall(the old main building). After the opening ceremony on April 12, 1973, the library began with 1,272 books and a librarian.
As upgraded to a university on March 1, 1981, the Central Library moved to the current library building that was constructed in 1983 on a 4,026-pyeong area owing to the 5-billion-won donation of Woo-Joong Kim, the former chairman of Daewoo Group. At first, the library building composed of the administration office in the south and the library in the north.
For now, the entire area is used for the library - Circulation Desk on the 1st floor, Multimedia Center, New Arrivals, Ajou Classics, Career Information Section, Digital Library Development Center and Information Support Team on the 2nd floor and All kinds of materials classified by subject on the 3rd and 4th floors including Big Book Section on the 3rd floor and Course Reserved Materials on the 4th floor.
The library has 4 study rooms and a group study room in the south on 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors respectively that are 24 hours open every day, reading rooms in the north that are open from 9am to 9pm on weekdays and from 9am to 5am on weekends and various online research information sources beyond space and time.
The Central Library has achieved a remarkable growth for 41 years, holding over 1,030,000 books, 30,000 e-resources, 35,000 multimedia materials and 2,367 seats as of 2016. It plays an important role as one of the central research information sources of Ajou University along with the Library of Medicine and the Law School Library of Ajou University.
