 GAZETTE Spring 2014

 CALL FOR PAPERS

Issue Theme: Bridging

This spring semesters Gazette will be based on the theme of ‘bridging’. This is an important concept in Korea at the moment. We are asking students to provide a 500-800 word piece on how you understand and use the concept of bridging and what it means to you?

Bridges in history have been used for many purposes, for example as instruments for spanning continents, rivers and valleys, or used for travel and development, or for bringing diverse communities together. There are also the different architectural forms of bridges with their different objectives and symbols, and made from different substances and materials. Bridges are also important in film and popular culture.

In Korea, the term bridging now means the bringing together of the global North and South, as well as between developed and developing world by exchanging ideas, by mediating and encouraging forms of official and unofficial partnerships and public diplomacy.

Therefore we are looking for Ajou GSIS students to bring their own understandings, experiences and ideas on what you think is and should be meant by, the term bridging in the following three areas and may include the following questions

  1. Institutions and partnerships

What institutions or actors can help bridging different nations?

What kinds of development can help bridge nations?

What kind of business/trade partnership is the most effective for bridging?

  1. Personal Experience

What economic, cultural, political aspects of your home country do you think can be used to help bridge Korea and your home country or region?

  1. Cultural artefacts

What forms of literature, architecture, music might symbolise the ‘bridging’ and exchange friendships or partnerships between your home country and Korea?

We are also looking for students to provide 500-800 word accounts of

-Recent Field trips and internship experience/information and commentary of experience

-Book and article reviews of work you have read fiction/non-fiction and recommended readings lists for other students and colleagues

-Reviews of newspaper articles on domestic Korean politics

Writing for the Gazette is good practice in writing for an edited magazine, and you can practice your writing skills and of course cite your work as a part of your CV

If you would like to write a piece for the Gazette please send your work to members of the Editorial board via email.
